Significant life change or event
Sometimes people experience unpleasant symptoms after a significant life change or event.
If you are experiencing difficulty concentrating, feeling overwhelmed, frequent crying, trouble sleeping, changes in appetite, and/or feelings of worry associated with a significant life event, you may be experiencing adjustment disorder.
The symptoms of adjustment disorder typically emerge within three months of the significant event and may include emotional and behavioral changes. Common symptoms include feelings of sadness, anxiety, irritability, difficulty concentrating, changes in appetite or sleep patterns, social withdrawal, and a sense of being overwhelmed.
Treatment for adjustment disorder often involves supportive therapy to help you process emotions, develop coping strategies, and regain a sense of control and stability.
Coping with anxiety
If you are experiencing excessive worry and difficulty controlling said worry, as well as difficulty concentrating, restlessness, being easily fatigued, irritability, muscle tension, and/or sleep disturbance, you may be experiencing generalized anxiety disorder.
If you are experiencing sudden periods of intense fear, discomfort, or sense of losing control even when there is no clear danger, and symptoms such as racing heart, sweating, trembling, chest pain, feelings of impending doom and/or being out of control, you may have panic disorder.
If you experience intense fear of evaluation by others, you may be experiencing social anxiety disorder (or social phobia). These are just a few types of anxiety and there are absolutely different presentations.
CBT provides individuals with practical tools and strategies to challenge and reframe anxious thoughts, leading to a reduction in anxiety symptoms. Through the therapeutic process, individuals learn to identify and replace irrational or distorted thoughts with more realistic and balanced thinking patterns. This shift in thinking helps to alleviate anxiety and reduce the accompanying distress.
Additionally, CBT emphasizes the importance of gradually exposing individuals to anxiety-provoking situations, a technique known as exposure therapy. By facing feared situations in a controlled and supportive environment, individuals learn to tolerate and manage their anxiety responses. Over time, this can lead to a decrease in anxiety levels and an increased sense of confidence and mastery.
Lack of pleasure in activities
If you are experiencing low mood, lack of pleasure in activities you typically enjoy, sleep difficulties, changes in eating behaviors/appetite, feelings of worthlessness or guilt, difficulty concentrating, and/or suicidal ideation, you may be experiencing major depressive disorder.
Psychotherapy can be helpful to identify beliefs, thoughts, and behavior patterns that contribute to and maintain depressive symptoms. Once identified, maladaptive beliefs and behavior patterns can be targeted and modified to improve mood. Further, assessing other important factors such as nutrition, exercise, sleep, and connection to others can help illuminate areas for possible improvement.
Grief and loss
Whether it be the loss of a loved one, pet, relationship, or situation (i.e. job loss, loss of an opportunity, etc.), it is important to get the support you need to cope. Working in psychotherapy can be helpful to process and honor emotions, make meaning of the event(s), and/or grow through these experience(s). Grief can be experienced at any stage of loss and it is never too late to make space to process loss.
Chronic Illness and/or Disability
Psychotherapy offers a supportive and transformative approach to help individuals with chronic illnesses and/or disabilities navigate the unique emotional, psychological, and social aspects of their circumstances. By providing a safe space to explore their experiences, psychotherapy enables individuals to develop coping strategies, enhance their well-being, and cultivate a positive outlook on life.
Through open and compassionate dialogue, psychotherapy helps individuals process the complex emotions often associated with chronic illness and/or disability. It provides a non-judgmental environment where individuals can express their fears, frustrations, and grief, while also exploring the potential for personal growth and acceptance. This process fosters emotional healing, resilience, and the development of effective coping mechanisms.
Furthermore, psychotherapy addresses the psychological impact that chronic illness and/or disability can have on an individual’s sense of self, relationships, and overall identity. It can help individuals redefine their self-concept and establish new goals and aspirations that are aligned with their present circumstances. By exploring their values, strengths, and resources, individuals can regain a sense of purpose, meaning, and agency in their lives.
Psychotherapy also offers a platform for individuals to address the social and interpersonal challenges associated with chronic illness or disability. It provides a space to navigate the complexities of family dynamics, intimate relationships, social support systems, and societal stigma. By developing effective communication skills and boundary-setting strategies, individuals can foster healthier relationships and establish a supportive network.
Perinatal mental health
Mental health issues are common in pregnancy and postpartum periods. There are many factors which can make this time particularly challenging for parents. Hormone changes, body changes, adjustment to identity, lifestyle changes, relationship changes, changes in sleep, and challenges in caregiving, just to name a few. A healthy parent and family system makes for a health child, hence the importance of seeking out support during this challenging time.
Success in relationships
Relationship issues can mean a lot of different things and involve many different types of relationships.
For example, although many couples benefit from couples’ therapy, it is often helpful for each part of the couple to attend individual therapy to help identify maladaptive behavior patterns or thought patterns that impact the relationship and develop new behavior patterns/beliefs.
Individual therapy for relationship issues can also help enhance communication, identify and establish boundaries, and initiate/maintain healthy relationships. Individual therapy can help identify and help you change factors that may be limiting your success in relationships.
Self-esteem issues
If you tend to be self-critical, judgmental, and think less of yourself than others, you may be dealing with low self-esteem. Self-esteem issues can be related to mental health conditions such as anxiety or depression or they can also come up in relation to external events or stressors. Sometimes it looks like not applying for a job because you believe you are not qualified enough despite your resume matching the requirements of the position. Sometimes it’s a general feeling of not being “good enough.” Often times people recognize their low self-esteem and struggle to improve it.
Trauma
Trauma is an intricate phenomenon that encompasses the profound emotional, psychological, and physiological responses to overwhelmingly distressing events. It can arise from experiences such as accidents, natural disasters, abuse, violence, or any situation that threatens a person’s safety, integrity, or well-being. Trauma shatters the equilibrium of an individual’s life, leaving lasting imprints on their nervous system.
The effects of trauma can vary significantly, as each person’s experience and response are unique. Common reactions include intense fear, helplessness, nightmares, flashbacks, anxiety, depression, and a sense of detachment from oneself or others. Traumatic experiences may also alter a person’s beliefs about trust, safety, and the world at large.
Importantly, trauma is not solely confined to specific events but can also result from prolonged exposure to chronic stress, unhealthy relationships, and systemic adversity. It can manifest as complex trauma when repeated traumatic incidents occur over an extended period, such as in cases of ongoing abuse or neglect.
Acknowledging trauma’s impact and providing compassionate support is crucial for those affected. With time, understanding, and appropriate care, individuals can gradually reclaim their lives and embark on a path toward recovery and growth.

PROFESSIONAL FEES
Dr. Marceron (and Evolve Behavioral Health) is only in network with Georgetown University Student Health Insurance (GUSHI). Otherwise, we are considered an “out of network” organization. If you do not have GUSHI, you can seek partial reimbursement from your health insurance company for our services. If you have a health insurance policy, it will usually provide some coverage for mental health treatment. In order to use your insurance to help cover your costs of care, you will need to plan on submitting your paid “superbills” (or itemized receipts of payment for services rendered) to your insurance company for partial reimbursement. This means that we do not take co-pays for services and balance bill insurance carriers (other than GUSHI).
Fees are collected at the time of the session via credit card. Dr. Marceron is happy to provide you with superbills at the end of each month so that you can submit them directly to your insurance provider for reimbursement. She will also provide any additional assistance that she can to help you received the benefits to which you are entitled. Please see FAQs for more information on submitting superbills to insurance for reimbursement.
Dr. Marceron does reserve certain session slots for clients who need a sliding scale/reduced fee. If session fees impact your ability to seek out treatment, please reach out to discuss the possibility of a sliding scale rate.
Dr. Marceron typically schedules 1-2 initial evaluation session(s) followed by recurring weekly 45 minute sessions; however, she is open to discussing duration of session and frequency to best fit your needs.
